This is the first b-boy mix I ever released from a little over 10 years ago. Prior to this I was a Drum & Bass DJ that released one mix and played out a couple times. My DJ crew at the time, Alpha Trion Crew, went our separate ways and I moved on to focus on funk and hip-hop and they continued with D&B (One of them can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/detentiondnb). This mix was just something I did mostly for fun and put out there under the name of my crew, Unnatural Causes (which became Risen from the Ashes in 2006). If you’re from the current generation, this can probably barely be considered a b-boy mix. I don’t rock a lot of doubles and they’re not all funk (there’s a house track in there and Rage Against the Machine). At the time my influences were a couple Leacy CDs and Joi and Masevo of Gruv Monkees (sp?) in Atlanta. In the early 2000s, they were the only ones playing b-boy jams and they’d often play things from a variety of genres that catered to all the dancers that showed up. At that time, there were few dedicated “B-boy Breaks” DJs so most jams (out of the 4 you had in your state) you’d hear a bit of everything; funk, electro, house, pop, rock. That was the era I came up in and what I heard at most jams in the south, which probably explains why I enjoy spinning All Styles battles. The picture is from Triptych Smackdown, the first b-boy jam I ever spun. Faust and Shortee also DJ’ed that night so it was pretty nerve wracking. What you hear on this mix, is probably what I played that night.
This was still early on in mixing breaks and hip-hop for me. I was much more used to doing long blends that I learned spinning D&B rather than cuts and juggling. Also during this time, I didn’t know how to edit or had the software to do it much anyway, so it was recorded in one take (out of the 20 or so attempts)and on vinyl. Not all the blends are perfect (some just plain bad to my ear) but there’s some moments in there that remain some of my favorites that I’ve recorded.
I can edit now, so I did take out the last 5 or 6 minutes that I am not a fan of.
